N. Chandrasekaran has resigned as Chairman of Tata Sons, announcing that he will not seek reappointment when his current term ends on February 20, 2027.
Chandrasekaran said his decision follows the lack of a unanimous resolution by the Tata Sons Board on extending his tenure. According to his statement, the Board meeting on the matter took place six months ago, but no resolution had been reached since then.
“Under these circumstances,” Chandrasekaran said, he had communicated to the Tata Sons Board that he had decided not to offer himself for reappointment when his term ends.
His resignation marks a major leadership transition for the Tata Group. Chandrasekaran joined the group in 1987 and became Chairman of Tata Sons in 2017, succeeding Cyrus Mistry.
Although he will step down in February 2027, Chandrasekaran will continue to lead Tata Sons until the completion of his current term. The decision now brings the group’s succession process into focus as Tata Sons prepares for its next chapter.
