X has launched “X Numbers,” a new privacy-focused feature that allows users to receive messages and calls through X without sharing their personal phone numbers.
The feature provides users with a private eight-digit code that can be shared with selected people. Those who have the code can message the user even when they do not follow each other or when the recipient has a closed inbox. Messages sent through an X Number go directly to the recipient’s main Chat inbox.
X Numbers can also facilitate audio and video calls, depending on the recipient’s call settings. X specifically clarifies that an X Number is not a phone number and is separate from its Chat safety number.
The feature is optional. Users can disable their X Number or refresh it to generate a new code if they believe it has been shared too widely. X also advises users to share the code only with people they want to be able to contact them.
The development expands X’s messaging capabilities beyond conventional follower-based communication. It could be particularly relevant for business networking, event communication, customer interactions and professional outreach, where users may want to establish direct communication without exchanging personal mobile numbers. Recent reporting also notes its potential use for selected business partners and client prospects.
Why It Matters
X Numbers represent another step in X’s broader effort to build messaging and communication directly into the platform. Instead of exchanging a personal phone number, users can now share a platform-specific access code.
For businesses and professionals, the feature could provide another layer between public social presence and private communication—allowing direct contact while keeping a personal phone number undisclosed.
