JioHotstar International Expansion—moving from being a dominant domestic streaming platform to competing for audiences in international markets.

JioStar’s JioHotstar has begun operations in the UK, Canada and Singapore, marking its first international expansion as the platform looks to tap the large and growing South Asian diaspora.

The move comes as India’s streaming market becomes increasingly competitive and platforms look beyond domestic subscriber growth for their next phase of expansion. For JioHotstar, the opportunity lies in taking one of its biggest strengths—India’s vast entertainment ecosystem—to audiences who already have a strong cultural connection with the country.

From Indian Platform to Global Proposition

JioHotstar will offer more than 160,000 hours of content across over 12 languages, including Hindi, English and Gujarati. The platform plans to gradually introduce popular franchises such as Bigg Boss, alongside original programming featuring Bollywood personalities.

The strategy, however, goes beyond simply exporting Indian content.

JioStar says it wants to build for a broader global audience by combining language, cultural diversity, personalisation and audience participation. That positioning could help the platform reach not only Indians living abroad but also wider South Asian audiences interested in Indian entertainment.

Why the Diaspora Matters

The addressable audience is substantial.

India’s overseas diaspora numbers more than 37 million, while Canada has around 3.2 million people of Indian origin, the UK around 1.3 million and Singapore about 483,000 according to Indian government data.

For streaming platforms, this audience offers an important advantage: cultural familiarity can reduce the cost of discovering and building demand for content.

Indian films, television franchises, regional-language programming and cricket already have established audiences overseas. JioHotstar can therefore enter these markets with a content library that has recognition before the platform itself becomes familiar.

Cricket and Entertainment: A Powerful Combination

JioHotstar’s domestic growth has been strongly supported by sports. During the 2025 IPL season, the platform reached 652 million digital viewers, while its overall subscriber base rose to 287 million during the season.

That demonstrates the commercial power of combining premium entertainment with high-engagement live sports.

Internationally, however, JioHotstar will need to build a proposition that works beyond cricket. Its extensive entertainment library, multilingual programming and popular franchises could become increasingly important in maintaining engagement between major sporting events.

A New Chapter for Indian Streaming

The international launch signals a broader shift in the Indian media industry.

For years, global streaming companies competed to bring international entertainment to Indian consumers. The equation is increasingly moving in the opposite direction too: Indian content is becoming a global product.

JioHotstar’s expansion reflects this changing opportunity.

The challenge now will be converting cultural affinity into sustainable subscriptions, building brand recognition in highly competitive streaming markets and creating content that appeals beyond the Indian diaspora.

If successful, JioHotstar could demonstrate that India’s enormous entertainment ecosystem is not just a domestic asset—it can become a foundation for global media growth.

The bigger question is no longer whether Indian entertainment can travel abroad. It is how large a global audience Indian storytelling can ultimately build.
