As consumer priorities shift and competition intensifies, Puma India is betting on value, sharper positioning and a renewed focus on performance and lifestyle.
For years, Puma built a powerful position in India by successfully blending sports performance with fashion and youth culture. Its sneakers became lifestyle statements, its celebrity collaborations generated attention, and its expanding retail footprint helped turn the German sportswear brand into a familiar name among Indian consumers. But the market is changing—and Puma India now needs more than brand visibility to sustain growth.
Under new managing director Ramprasad Sridharan, Puma India is taking a closer look at the value equation. The strategy comes at a time when consumers are becoming more selective about discretionary spending and competition in India’s sportswear market is intensifying.
The question is not simply whether Puma can sell more shoes or apparel. It is whether the brand can convince consumers that its products are worth choosing—and paying for—in an increasingly crowded market.
The Value Challenge
The sportswear industry has evolved rapidly. Nike and Adidas continue to compete at the premium end, while brands such as Skechers, Asics, New Balance and a growing number of Indian and digital-first labels are fighting for consumer attention. At the same time, marketplaces have made price comparison easier than ever.
This creates a difficult balancing act for Puma.
Aggressive discounts can generate short-term sales but risk weakening brand perception. Premium pricing, meanwhile, requires strong product differentiation. The real opportunity lies somewhere between the two: delivering products that consumers perceive as offering genuine value without turning the brand into a discount-led proposition.
That distinction could become central to Puma India’s next phase.
From Visibility to Relevance
Puma has already established strong visibility among younger Indian consumers. The next challenge is converting that visibility into deeper and more sustainable consumer loyalty.
That means making performance technology, product design, comfort and durability part of the value story—not relying exclusively on celebrity endorsements or fashion appeal.
India’s sportswear consumer is also becoming more diverse. The market now includes serious runners, gym-goers, recreational athletes and consumers who simply want comfortable everyday footwear. A broader product strategy could allow Puma to capture these different occasions without diluting its identity.
India Is Too Important to Ignore
India remains one of the world’s most attractive consumer markets, supported by a young population, rising disposable incomes, increasing fitness awareness and rapid growth in organised retail and e-commerce.
For global sportswear companies, therefore, India is not merely another emerging market. It is increasingly a strategic growth opportunity.
But opportunity also brings expectations. Consumers have more choices, more information and greater willingness to switch brands. The companies that win will be those that understand local price sensitivity while maintaining global brand credibility.
Puma’s challenge is to achieve precisely that balance.
Can the New Leadership Change the Trajectory?
A leadership transition can provide an opportunity to rethink everything from pricing and distribution to product mix and marketing.
But a strategy built around “value” cannot remain a pricing exercise. Puma will need to demonstrate why its products deserve a place in consumers’ wardrobes and sports kits even when alternatives are available at lower prices.
The bigger test will therefore be execution.
If Puma India can combine compelling products, disciplined pricing, stronger performance credentials and a sharper understanding of Indian consumers, the current reset could become more than a recovery strategy. It could become the foundation for the brand’s next growth chapter.
The race in India’s sportswear market is no longer simply about who has the biggest logo. It is about who can deliver the strongest value without losing the power of the brand. For Puma India, that may be the most important race of all.
