Starbucks is set to establish its first Global Capability Centre (GCC) in India, with Chennai selected as the location for a new technology-focused hub expected to create around 800 jobs.
The US coffee company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government for the proposed centre. The agreement was signed on September 21, 2026.
The Chennai GCC will support Starbucks’ global operations through higher-value functions including software development, finance and research and development. The centre will operate independently of Starbucks’ retail business joint venture with Tata Consumer Products in India.
Chennai Strengthens Its GCC Position
Starbucks’ decision adds to Chennai’s growing role as a destination for Global Capability Centres. The city already hosts technology and business centres of several multinational companies.
Starbucks’ technology leadership cited Chennai’s skilled technology workforce, infrastructure and talent availability among the factors supporting the company’s decision.
The development also reflects the changing role of GCCs in India. These centres are increasingly being used for functions beyond traditional back-office operations, including technology development, finance and R&D.
Starbucks operates around 500 stores in India through its joint venture with Tata Consumer Products. The new GCC represents a separate technology and business-services initiative.
