Government expands semiconductor strategy to strengthen India’s chip manufacturing ecosystem
India is taking another major step towards becoming a global semiconductor hub with the upcoming Semicon 2.0 initiative. Building on the success of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), the new phase will expand government support beyond semiconductor fabrication plants to include chip design, packaging, testing, research, and workforce development.
A Broader Vision for Chip Manufacturing
Unlike the first phase, which focused primarily on attracting fabrication units, Semicon 2.0 aims to develop a complete semiconductor ecosystem. The government plans to encourage investments in Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP/OSAT) facilities, semiconductor design companies, research centres, and semiconductor-grade materials. The initiative is expected to strengthen India’s manufacturing capabilities and enhance its role in the global chip supply chain.
Growing Investment Momentum
India has already approved multiple semiconductor projects under the India Semiconductor Mission, attracting investments from both domestic and global companies. States such as Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha are emerging as key destinations for semiconductor manufacturing and electronics production, supported by government incentives and infrastructure development.
